New and Used Proton Cars
Countries in Asia, such as Japan and Korea, lead the world in the development of car technology and the manufacture of new car models that can be lined side by side with European and Western versions.
In 1983, the world was shocked with the leadership displayed by the then Malaysian government under the leadership of Tun Mahathir Mohammad, when a local car manufacturing industry (with the flagship name Proton) was built under the directive of the incumbent Malaysian government. This, and other government movements were a clear indication of Malaysia's commitment to boosting national pride into its local car products and by making use of government funding to fuel economic reforms.
Tun Mahathir Mohammad was Malaysia's prime minister from 1981 to 2003. This makes him the most controversial and longest serving leader in the history of the Asian continent. The first Proton car was built using the technology and intense consultations with Japan's Mitsubishi Motors. This continued until Proton management started to gain the necessary technology and expertise to make move forward independently. They did this by coming up with innovative Proton car designs and installing novel car technology not seen in other existing car models.
The first ever successful car by Proton was the used Proton Saga of 1985. This car was mainly inspired by Mitsubishi Motors' wealth of engineering and inspired by the latter company's Lancer Fiore. Proton basically exploited this specific car design for more than 20 years until an in-house designer finally unveiled a new car design that would be used as a design platform for future new and used Proton cars.
The used Proton Saga envisioned producing an alternative car designs (the saloon) that are affordable and economically efficient in terms of fuel consumption. This design apparently became the preferred car model among taxi drivers in Malaysia, as usually seen in busy streets of Kuala Lumpur, the country's capital.
Current new / used Proton cars models marketed in the UK are the new & used Proton Gen 2, which sold several thousand units in just a short period of time. The new and used Proton Savvy, which is a mini car counterpart - a car that champions less fuel consumption and space management, is able to nip through spaces that cannot normally be achieved by a regular sized vehicle.
Proton also introduced the Satria Neo in the UK to provide a much smaller car size, stylistic designs, yet powerful combustion engines with the CamPro 16V engine. The installation of this top of the line 16-valve engine added a few hundred pounds to its selling price. Proton is also in the process of redesigning existing saloon brands by giving them a touch of elegance and luxurious style, such as the recently manufactured Impian, which has since become a very popular used Proton car to buy.
Proton currently occupy a fair presence in the second hand car market for their used Proton cars. As noted above, the used Proton Gen is a popular choice for buyers as is the used Proton Savvy. Recently the used Proton Satria has also had an increase in demand, which might be a sign of things to come.
