New and Used Jaguar Cars
A long history of elegant styling and sporting performance spells the perfect combination for used Jaguar cars. Two motorcycle enthusiasts, William Lyons and William Walmsley founded the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922.
The name SS Jaguar first appeared on a 2.5 litre used Jaguar saloon during 1935. Due to lack of popularity from WWII, the SS was dropped and the name Jaguar was given to the entire company in 1945. This name then went onto produce exquisite new / used Jaguar cars for decades to come.
The brand name Jaguar was born in the United Kingdom. For years, used Jaguar vehicles were synonymous with the old-world luxury of the British upper classes. Along with the distinctive "leaping Jaguar" mascot on its series of elegantly-styled sports cars and luxury saloons, Jaguar made its name in the 1950s. It is pronounced "jag-u-are" (except in North America) where it is often pronounced "jag-war" with the term "Jag" being used colloquially. Either way, new and used Jaguar cars made for popular demand all over the world.
With engines designed by The Standard Motor Company, the Jaguar Company started production with the pre-war 1.5 litre, 2.5 litre and 3.5 litre models, now known unofficially as Mark IVs. In 1948, the big breakthrough was launched - the XK 120 sports car. This car exhibited the new XK twin overhead camshaft 3.5 litre hemi-head six-cylinder engine. About 200 vehicles served as test beds for the new engine, but the demand for the XK 120 was so much that its production continued for the next six years. More XK 120 models were produced and the demand for a second hand / used Jaguar XK 120 was huge.
In the meantime, the Mark 2 is a byword with the British police forces because of its small size, powerful engine and weight. The Mark 2 is considered to be the most chosen of the Jaguar models ever produced. But, still retaining its distinctness, the Jaguar soon became the choice for many and the most significant is the new / used Jaguar XJ, according to figures from 1968 to the present.
Another very current model is the new Jaguar XF described to have the performance of a sports car having a grand design. Quite impressive, it has been awarded as the Car of the Year as well as Best Executive Car in the prestigious What Car Awards for 2008. It features a 6 speed automatic transmission, high tech driver-friendly touch screen controls and mood lighting for its interior. Even now, used Jaguar XF vehicles are retaining their value thanks to the quality of engineering that is Jaguar.
Jaguar merged with a combination of other corporations and the company later became known as the British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) in 1968. However, the company was in tight financial conditions and had to look for other options in 1975. This move later led to effective nationalisation. The new company name became British Leyland Limited. Today, Jaguars are designed, developed, and assembled at Castle Bromwich in Birmingham and Halewood, Liverpool.
To this day, Jaguar continues to progress. Many car enthusiasts purchase used Jaguar cars of old as collectors' items, which goes to show just how consistent the production of Jaguar cars has been (the fact that used Jaguar engines are still perfectly functional). It seems that although the new XF is currently becoming the peoples' choice, used Jaguar cars bought for their history and prestige are equally as popular and it seems that the used Jaguar car market will only continue to grow.
