Isuzu's roots were planted back in 1916 when Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Engineering and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company, produced Japan's first truck. It was in 1922 when the company built its first automobile. This was followed in 1935 when the company built a prototype bus, the first of its type in Japan. Isuzu made innovations such as air brakes and under the floor engine installation.

During the post war years, production of now used Isuzu trucks boomed, playing a very important part in Japan's reconstruction efforts as these used Isuzu trucks were used to transport food, clothes and other basic necessities.

In later years, Isuzu decided to include new and used Isuzu automobile manufacturing to broaden its business. The company moved forward resolutely into a unique partnership with the U.K. based Wolesley Motors Company in 1918. It acquired a license to manufacture and sell England's cars in Japan. The used Isuzu A9 car was its first licensed offering followed later by its first truck, the used Isuzu CP.

Several mergers and divestitures were bravely established into international ventures. It was during 1953 when Isuzu, in a technical alliance with Rootes, a U.K. company, launched the now used Isuzu Hillman Minx passenger car. Other passenger cars were also introduced in the 1960s - the Bellet, the used Isuzu 117 Coupe and the Florian, including trucks like the WASP.

Company sales remained strong in the 1990's, partly because of the successful rise in demand for The Trooper, one of the models gaining popularity for the SUV vehicle category at the time.

The new millennium brought both bad and good news to Isuzu. Despite the entire financial debacle it had to face, Isuzu never wavered. It relentlessly pursued other successful ventures and created new vehicles.

Isuzu has been awarded more than 21 Good Design Prizes by the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry for the company's excellence in function, design and quality. Today, Isuzu is a world leader in the production of reliable vehicles, emphasising that indeed reliability is everything.
