With the intention of liquidating the assets of the firm, the financial backers of Ford, Lemuel Bowen and William Murphy, had the equipment and the plant itself appraised. The appraiser hired was Henry M. Leland, the owner of Leland & Faulconer Manufacturing Company, and he persuaded Bowen and Murphy to continue operations. This time, it would be with the use of Leland's 1-cylinder engine. The Cadillac Automobile Company was then born.
